Mystical Banyan Treehouse @ Kallang Riverside Park; Singapore

Kallang Riverside Park is home to many banyan trees. They will greet you as you enter the park. Banyan trees have always been my favourite tree. Growing up in the Philippines, where banyan trees are locally called Balete, Balite or Baliti, I have heard of many stories of the spirits who like to call the banyan tree home and how sometimes it is a gateway between our world and the spirit world, hence Filipino's would sometimes call it the "Spirit Tree". But those stories never seemed to frighten me, in fact they would even intrigue me more.

But there's one banyan tree in Kallang Riverside Park that is different from all the rest. This one, as strange as it may seem, has a house within its roots; or at least remnants of what used to be a house.

As you go closer to the tree, you can start to make out parts of what used to be a house. A stone gate, exposed bricks of the walls, tile floors and doorway arches entangled in the roots of the banyan tree.

 

No one really knows the origin of the house, or who built it and why it was built. But as nature claims what was always hers, the remnants of the former house within the banyan tree adds mysterious touch to the Kallang Riverside Park.
