Ang Pagbabalik Lupa @ U.P. Diliman Quezon City; Philippines

This is one of my favourite art installations (out of the newer ones) in U.P. Diliman.

I intentionally waited months after it's initial installation (it was first installed at the U.P. Diliman Ampitheater during Sansinukob; U.P. Diliman's Art Month) so that it would get that nice weathered look to it (as it is exposed to the elements) and get that eerie look to it.

The title of the art installation is "Ang Pagbabalik Lupa" (English: Returning to the Earth). This art installation was made by Anton del Castillo.

Ang Pagbabalik Lupa

It's based on the Kalinga story about the departure of the Gods, and shows the separation between the Gods and humans.

Eerie yet powerful....

The art installation depicts a shrouded/cloaked woman with her hands on her face descending a stairway and slowly falling and "melting"  into the earth.

Return to the earth....

Descend the stairway

It's an eerie message of what I think, is the forgetting of the old ways when humans and nature and the Gods lived together and man's fall from "grace" (whatever belief).

The mysterious shrouded figure.....

What I like about most of the art installation is the eerieness of it. It gives off this mysterious feeling as if to scare and intimidae the audience. But it's also alluring and pulls you in to see all the fine details of the figures.

I swear it could be a real person!

All the details of the shroud/cloth looks so real! All the folds are on point. From a far the figured look like real people.

Who are you.?

Falling even more....

It's evokes a mix of heavy emotions; fear, sadness, shame and the like. But at the same time you want to follow the figure as she falls even more into the earth and find out why she is covering her face with her hands.

Are you crying?

The fallen

The strongest emotions are felt (or at least for me) when the figure of the woman has "melted" completely into the earth, with only the remnants of the shroud and what looks to be one of her hands the only things felt of her human figure.

"Ang Pagbabalik Lupa" is now located (permanently; I hope) at the open garden space between the Univeristy Theater and the U.P. Carillon Tower.
